Addiction is an illness that can take many forms and can lead to self destructive behavior by the addict and can cause chaos for the family and friends of the people living with the addict. I often get asked about how to handle a friend or relative that is dealing with an addiction. The advice that I usually start with is that one needs to take care of themself first. If you are involved in a relationship and think the person you love should get counseling, I say first seek counseling for yourself. Lead by example. If the person never does get help, which in the end you have no control over, at least you are taking care of yourself and hopefully gain some insight about your own life.
